Southampton took the early advantage against Liverpool in their English Football League Cup semi-final on Wednesday as they beat them 1-0 in the first leg.
The Reds had the first real chance of the tie in the 18th minute when Adam Lallana teed up Roberto Firmino from a cross but his powerful shot at goal was brilliantly saved by Fraser Forster.
Moments later it was the Saints who were on the attack. Cedric surged down the flank and found Nathan Redmond with a cross, but his shot was saved by Loris Karius’s leg.
Only a minute after missing a chance, Redmond broke the deadlock for the home side. A mistake from Ragnar Klavan gave Jay Rodriguez the chance to play in his teammate who finished with composure.
Shortly before the interval Redmond had a great chance to double the advantage. Dusan Tadic found him with a cross, but the attempt was straight at Karius who made a smart stop.
Just shy of the hour mark Jurgen Klopp’s men were on the front foot as Lallana found himself with room to shoot from the edge of the box, but his effort was well wide.
Lallana was in the thick of it again shortly thereafter, combining with Firmino who could only send his shot straight down Forster’s throat.
The Saints had another terrific chance to double their lead in the 83rd minute when Shane Long found Redmond with a cross, but he found the bar with his effort.
