Messi and Ronaldo have dominated individual awards since 2008, and one of them is expected by many to lift the Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2016 award on Monday, 9 January.
However, in the voting for the 2016 UEFA Team of the Year (TOTY), Sergio Ramos has received more votes than the two rivals.
The Los Blancos captain got 488 908 of the more than seven million votes in total, more than any other player in the line-up.
Ronaldo follows in second place with 450 220 votes, while Messi received 418 449 nominations.
Luka Modric, with 381 234, and Andres Iniesta, with 332 914, complete the top five, while in terms of clubs Real Madrid received 24% of the votes – 8% more than second-placed FC Barcelona.
Ronaldo has made the cut for the 11th time in his career, more than any other player, while Messi has been selected for the eighth time, and Ramos equalled Carlos Puyol’s record for the defender with the most selections with his sixth appearance.
