Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick ‘Tower’ Mathoho’s name is still being bandied about in Mamelodi Sundowns’ corridors.
The Siya crew reported last year that CAF Champions League winners were considering signing the Amakhosi star in the future, and a source has since revealed that Sundowns are still looking at the possibility of bringing the player to the club.
In the past, Mathoho’s representative, Tim Sukazi, has been quoted in local media saying that the 26-year-old’s deal will expire at the end of the 2016/17 season. There has been no confirmation of a contract extension for the player since then, by either the club or the player’s camp.
However, unconfirmed reports have revealed that Chiefs could have an option to extend Tower’s contract beyond the 2016/17 season.
Centre-back Lorenzo Gordinho has since put pen to paper on a new deal with Amakhosi, after his contract was previously set to expire at the end of the season. Tower has not yet signed a new deal.
Amakhosi have been linked to no less than five defenders in recent months. Three of them were on trial with Chiefs this past month. Why are Chiefs looking to bolster their defensive department?
Sundowns’ centre-backs, Wayne Arendse (32) Thabo Nthethe (32) and Ricardo Nascimento, who will be turning 30-years-old this year, do not have age on their side and Sundowns will want to bring in a younger face.
Arendse and Nthethe’s contract with Sundowns will come to an end on June 30, in less than six months’ time. Neither of the players’ spells have been extended, Nthethe however, has an option on his contract.
Indications are that if Mathoho does not pen a new deal with Chiefs, he could leave Amakhosi for Sundowns on a free at the end of the 2016/17 campaign, adding cover to the defence.
While it is known that Sundowns want the player, before moving to another club in the PSL, it is believed that Tower would consider an offer from abroad, and the likes of Europe and the MLS have already been mooted.
