Whether it has been a player forcing a move or footballers requesting to be put on the transfer list, the Premier League has seen its fair share of controversial transfers, with Dimitri Payet’s request to be sold by West Ham United being the latest. Today we bring you 10 transfers that left a sour taste in supporters’ mouths.
Over the years, London side Arsenal have seen their fair share of players moving away to other English rivals, for different reasons. Arguably, the Gunners’ most controversial departures of late were Ashley Cole and Robin van Persie. Former England defender Cole left the club after apparently being tapped up by Chelsea, while it is believed Netherlands striker Van Persie packed his bags because he wanted to win a Premier League title.
Carlos Tevez’s move from Manchester United to city rivals Manchester City got Red Devils supporters fuming, even though he was only on load at Old Trafford. The Argentine was expected to sign a full-time contract with Sir Alex Ferguson’s charges but changed his mind when the club’s city rivals came in with a better offer for him.
England International Raheem Sterling was also involved in a controversial move after he decided to leave Liverpool for Manchester City back in 2015. The season before, the Reds ended second in the Premier League, but this was not enough to keep the player happy as he felt he needed to move on in order to take his game to the next level.
Other stars in our gallery who were in involved in shock moves are Nicolas Anelka, Javier Mascherano, Sol Campbell, Emmanuel Adebayor, Peter Odemwingie and Samir Nasri.
